The inability to have everything under control in a film is an inseparable companion of the profession, but when the shoot depends on external factors or budget is not what one would wish, there are setbacks. At the same time, luckily, it activates the imagination and the ability to improvise, sometimes with better results than others.
The shooting of several scenes covering Montemedio several episodes of the series. Some face to face important weight between characters and dialogues with many nuances, and the presentation of a crucial character for the series. When planning a sequence of this type, usually prefer not to try many frills with the camera at the time to tell the story, but let the actors weight to flow freely. Ruin a good interpretation by technical failure is perhaps one of the things that bothers me most in a film.
So when I visited Montemedio with Rafa, I mentioned that the Golf club pool was perfect for locating the shooting. A quiet, affluent, and that framed perfectly the character of the main character in the scenes. Rafa permits closed-how we were treated there, by the way-all on wheels.
The day of filming arrived early. After some shooting, you know exactly how it will be the day, if you'll have problems if everything is set to what you brought thought beforehand. As we drew lighting equipment, I knew almost August sun was beginning to rise would be a nightmare and that our lights-good, but modest in watts-bit would do. Obviously, the solution is filtered with canopies to match the contrast between the soft light of the actors and the background, completely burned by the sun-burned image on camera when you can not record anything due to the amount of light, being all white , and being impossible to recover in post. Clearly, neither have canopies or generators or HMI lights 15 thousand watts, so at the height of oppression-the-sun was more, I got out of the pool to the golf course, to find a solution. And there it was in front of me. Outside, a centennial oak dominated the scene, and its branches filtered the light under the tree giving a wonderful quality. Amid spectacular scenery, tree and some architectural elements background gave me the ability to relate to the characters in these locations if you wanted to highlight certain aspects of the protagonists. Also: was visually more appealing than the pool, not molestábamos to customers and not have to end so early.
I went back inside and, after discussing the situation with Henry who found it was perfectly Nicholas. The infernal wind up the balls was interesting because in contrast to the unchanging attitude of the protagonist of the scenes but what about sound? Nicholas gave the nod, Vincent made sound assistant, shielding the wind ... and the day began and ended better than expected.
This is an example of many in which you plan the scene, visits the site, it looks all clear, get the day of shooting and unforeseen factor changes everything. That, or improvise or you go home and you go into breakdown. Fortunately, we are quiet people. As a detail, the entire lighting equipment, do not use anything at all: only natural reflections of the table and the movement to create leaves on the faces of the characters a disturbing light changes.
